In a large-scale genome study involving more than 19,200 people with and without autism spectrum disorder, researchers found three new genetic pathways linked with the developmental disorder.  One pathway affects the neurotransmitter glutamate, which has a significant role in certain brain functions such as memory, learning, thinking, attention, and behavior. Although the study was quite large, it captured only about 20% of genes thought to be responsible for ASD.
