ARI’s Clinician Registry lists practitioners who provide biomedically-based treatment for children and adults with autism. Many of these practitioners are physicians, and others offer related services in healthcare.
In order to better serve the community, ARI has altered the requirements for inclusion on the list of Defeat Autism Now! practitioners. The first list includes clinicians who are licensed healthcare providers (MDs, DOs, Naturopathic Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, and Physician's Assistants). The clinician must attend a Defeat Autism Now! Clinician Seminar at least once every two years. We also require a signed statement asserting that the clinician subscribes to and conducts his/her practice in accordance with the Defeat Autism Now!® philosophy. There are naturopaths and homeopaths who offer the Defeat Autism Now! approach, who are not required by state law to have a license in their field of practice; they are included on a second list. And finally, there are nutritionists who offer the Defeat Autism Now! approach, who are also not required to have a license to practice this approach.
By 2010, ARI's clinician registry will include four lists:
- Nutrition list: those listed must hold a license or certificate in either dietetics or nutrition. They must be licensed or monitored by a supervisory board at the state or national level.
- Licensed Clinicians - (MDs, DOs, Naturopathic Physicians (but not "naturopaths"), Nurse Practitioners, and Physician's Assistants.): contact information on clinicians who have attended Levels I and II. This training, and their areas of specialty, enable them to design complex treatment plans, which might include targeted nutritional supplements, prescription medications, and interpretations of complex laboratory data.
- Allied Health Professionals: all clinicians who have attended the Level I clinician seminar. Some can legally prescribe, but have not yet attended Level II, some might have attended Level II but don’t write prescriptions, due to the scope of their specialty. RNs, psychologists, homeopaths, chiropractors, dentists, homeopaths, and pharmacists, who have areas of expertise many families will find valuable, are in this category.
- Unlicensed Practitioners – These individuals have attended a Level I seminar in the past, and were taught the basics of biomedical interventions. Note that by the end of 2010, a new policy will be in effect that allows only clinicians licensed by the proper governing body to attend the seminars. At that time, this fourth list will be discontinued.
As before, the Autism Research Institute disclaims and does not endorse or support any individual or entity listed; makes no representations, warranties, guarantees or promises on behalf of or for those listed, and assumes no liability nor responsibility for any service or product provided. ARI does not "certify" practitioners or guarantee competence, skill, knowledge, or experience.
We strongly recommend that if you are seeking a practitioner to help with your child's biomedical needs you interview the practitioner of your choosing to ensure that they are well-versed and experienced in the various aspects of the biomedical approach. View a sampling of recommended questions.
We strongly recommend that you read the introduction located at the top of the list.
