Researchers studied “minimally verbal” school-aged children with autism who began treatment with a speech-generating device (SGD) on a tablet. The program included a blended, adaptive treatment design that focused on joint engagement. Their results showed an improvement in spontaneous play skills and communicative utterances. In addition, these children made significant and rapid gains in spoken spontaneous language, communicative utterances, and the expression of novel words.
