Healing Our Autistic Children Julie Buckley's new book takes aim at demystifying the 'whole-body phenomenon' of autism
Julie Buckley has
a pretty full plate: she is a
pediatrician; mother of a daughter overcoming autism; breast cancer survivor;
and now, author. She
has written the just-released Healing Our Autistic Children: A Medical
Plan for Restoring Your Child's Health, which brings home the point that autism is a
whole-body phenomenon - not a disorder confined to the brain. Dr. Buckley breaks down the science behind
methylation, immune dysregulation, and a host of complicated chemical and
physiological processes into easy-to-understand concepts. After finishing the book--a surprisingly
easy read considering all the science involved--it would be hard for the reader
not to accept the whole-body model. "I
wrote the book as an invitation for people who aren't sure whether or not the
world is round to come look through the telescope," says Dr. Buckley. She
employs the kind of metaphors that make the book unintimidating for the
new parent. The
book is also aimed at educating the uninformed physician; to assuage
any fears of 'pseudoscience,' the appendix contains almost 100 references, and
17 abstracts of critical studies. Dr.
Buckley readily admits that before her daughter was affected at age 4, she was not a particularly well-informed
pediatrician with regard to ASD, knowing only what she had been taught in med school. When asked how she dealt with parents who related stories of their child's regression, she pauses before saying
quietly, "I told them they were crazy." And
on the other side of the fence, Julie the Mom, like many autism Moms, remembers
being in denial.But
after accepting the diagnosis,she quickly
got up to speed. She helped her own daughter improve remarkably via
biomedical interventions, but she wanted to also help spread the word. She speaks at conferences, trains other
physicians, and now has written a book. "It's
all about building communication bridges," says Dr. Buckley.

April is Autism Awareness Month: Sell Puzzle Pieces for ARI Join our Million Dollar Puzzle Campaign
Now's the perfect time to order your free Puzzle Piece kits and prepare to launch a campaign in your community during Autism Awareness Month this April.
Update from the campaign chair: We had a great response to the February article. I received some 38 requests for information, 13 of which did order puzzle pieces. We sent out 2400 more puzzle pieces this month! Current stats: We have distributed 4,054 packets = 202,700 puzzle pieces. We are in 48 states, plus Puerto Rico, Oslo, Norway, Singapore, Hagatna, Guam, Barcelona, Spain, & 6 locations in Canada - Westmount, QC, Brandon, MB, Prince Albert, SK, Saskatoon, SK, and Calgary, Alberta (540 cities).
So far, we have collected $89,962 for the Autism Research Institute. We would love for anyone planning autism awareness activities during April, National Autism Awareness month, to consider helping us raise funds for badly needed autism research by distributing our puzzle pieces at their events. Together we can fund the research our government deems unworthy of funding. Remember this is an all-volunteer effort and every penny of every dollar raised goes directly to ARI, specifically for research. - Lynda Huggins mother of Jon, age 34

From the Director:
There is one month left of winter, and I know that many of you, especially those living on the east coast, are more than ready for a warm spring. As usual, we are busy at ARI, answering phones, letters and emails, as well as working on a large number of projects. I would like to thank all of the families who emailed photos of their children to us. We have been uploading them to a digital photo frame located in our office. As mentioned last month, these photos are true inspirations to us. If you'd like, you can send one to our office at: OurPhotos@autism.com. The size of the photo file should not exceed 2 megabytes, and it needs to be either a .jpg or a .gif file. Please note that the photo frame does not read text. Dr. Valerie Paradiz, Mark Rimland, and I met with several families at a café in San Diego last weekend, and we all had a very good time--so much so that we want to do it again. The three of us will be sipping coffee at Lestat's Coffee House on Sunday, March 21, from 10:00 - 11:30 am. The address is 3343 Adams Avenue, San Diego, CA. If you live in the area, please join us for a Sunday morning chat! Stay warm and dry.

Try Your Hand at the Biomedical Approach in our "Demo Room"
T aking
a page from Biology 101, ARI offers its on-site "lab," teaching
practical skills for taking the biomedical approach home. The
"Demonstration Room" will be offered during breaks and lunchtime on
Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at the Spring Conference in Baltimore. The
ARI/Defeat Autism Now! Conference offers parents effective strategies for
helping their children, serving as a meeting ground for clinicians
using a biomedical approach and the parents who seek their aid. Still,
for many of us, returning to what is in effect a biology/chemistry
class presents a challenging learning curve. While lectures are
essential to our understanding, the
information is only as effective as the hands that are charged with putting
these treatments into effect.
Don't
miss this chance to stop by for free one-to-one tutorials by
experienced healthcare professionals and experienced parents. Topics
include administering B-12 injections, scheduling supplements, tracking
treatment success, teaching pill swallowing, and more. The "Demo Room" is
free with your paid registration. Questions? Or are you a medical professional who wants to volunteer in exchange for free admission? Email Us

New to the biomedical approach? Meet a parent mentor
For
many families new to the autism diagnosis or starting the biomedical
approach, finding a parent mentor can help ease the frustration, help
to navigate the confusing "system," and help jump-start the family with
ACTION for their child affected by autism. Our friends at Talk
About Curing Autism have a key focus on building the autism community
and helping families affected by autism. They have generously offered
to connect parents, with a chance to meet a TACA Parent Mentor at
the conference.
