From the Director: Tribute for Dr. Rimland Set for the Spring Defeat Autism Now! Conference

I want to invite and encourage you to join us for our Saturday dinner at the Defeat Autism Now! ® Conference.  It will be a great place to meet other parents and to dine on a delicious buffet dinner.  It will also be a very emotional evening because we will have a tribute to Dr. Bernard Rimland.  Stan Kurtz - a parent and active member in DAN!® - has produced a heartfelt film about Dr. Rimland.  Stan, thanks in advance for your hard work and dedication.  Afterward, several people who knew Dr. Rimland will share their personal thoughts and a few stories.  Although optional, tissues are recommended.

On a lighter note, Paul Shattock will be the Master of Ceremonies! For those who cannot attend the dinner, we will show the film during the lunch break on Sunday.

Financial Assistance for Military Families

Being a navy veteran himself, Dr. Rimland felt a close connection to families in the military who have children with autism.  In his memory, the Autism Research Institute and DAN!® would like to extend a 25 percent discount to those families who wish to attend the spring conference in Alexandria, Virginia. If you would like to receive this discount, please e-mail Defeat Autism Now!’s director of registration at Tanya@DANconference.com and let her know which branch of service you are in.  She will then provide you with a very simple procedure to register online.

We do ask that when you pick up your registration materials at the conference, you show your Military ID. We are all very grateful for your service to our country and we look forward to seeing you.

Clinician’s Perspective:
Ten years ago my son’s pediatrician openly admitted he knew nothing about treating autism and told me he hoped I could find someone who did. That journey took me to Bernie Rimland. While Bernie’s work here on Earth is finished, his legacy remains. He founded Defeat Autism Now! with Jon Pangborn and Sid Baker in the mid 90s. Fortunately, I didn't have to step into a vacuum. DAN!® provided the clinical and scientific basis for the most advanced and successful biomedical interventions available both then and today. It has been a wonderful learning and sharing experience for me to be associated with Defeat Autism Now! ® My son’s remarkable gains are due to a combination of therapies taught and practiced by providers and combined with the best in behavioral therapy. It is a pleasure and privilege to be part of this medical revolution which is determined to do what some may think is impossible: the recovery of children with autism to normal, fully-included life.

Dr. Bradstreet is the founder of the International Child Development Resource Center in Florida. He is an Adjunct Professor of Neurosciences at Stetson University, Florida and the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine, Phoenix, Arizona. Dr. Bradstreet serves as an active collaborator on research projects at numerous medical schools. His interests in autism include metal detoxification, hyperbarics and immunological management of gastrointestinal problems. Dr Bradstreet will review the favorable clinical observations and research outcomes regarding the use of Hyperbaric Oxygen in autism spectrum disorders and outline common protocols.

Discover Magazine Explores the Mystery of ASD

Don’t miss “Autism: It’s Not Just in the Head,” in this month’s Discover Magazine – it’s a rare but welcome sight.  At last, an article addressing in-depth, the biomedical treatment of Autism and discussing potential causes in a fair and balanced manner.  A refreshing article from a mainstream media source.

Comments from Past DAN!® Conference Attendees:

We knew something was different about our blue-eyed blonde when he was about nine months old.  Our pediatrician was hesitant to agree.  So we asked: "But, why doesn't he know his name? What's causing the chronic skin rashes? Why did that twinkle in his eye fade away? Why isn't he developing?"  We couldn't accept that nobody had any answers, so we spent a year going round and round, until we finally stumbled upon a long-anticipated diagnosis of Autism.

So, now what do we do?

Well, after luckily meeting some extremely special parents, we attended our first Defeat Autism Now! ® Conference.  That has saved our son from a life he didn't deserve.  We have altered his diet, attended therapy, and followed a DAN!® approach and now our son will very soon be one of those kids up there on that stage telling his brave story of recovery.  He knows his name, his skin is beautiful, and I was finally able to hear my three year old say his first word this year.  He has the potential to do whatever he wants in life.  I owe this to DAN!®.

Thank-you.

We Band of Mothers: Autism, My Son and the
Specific Carbohydrate Diet

Judy Chinitz will be signing her new book titled We Band of Mothers: Autism, My Son and the Specific Carbohydrate Diet, at the upcoming Defeat Autism Now! ® Conference.  Judy is the mother of two sons, Alex, who is 13 and autistic and Liam, who is 9. By 2003, when Alex was nine-years-old, his physical condition had deteriorated to the point where a feeding tube was being considered. Judy remembered hearing of the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) which subsequently turned Alex's life around. She became very close friends with Elaine Gottschall, the author of Breaking the Vicious Cycle (the book lays out the details of the diet), and together they planned to write a book about the use of the diet with children with developmental issues. Unfortunately Elaine passed away at the very start of the project, but Judy carried on with it. We Band of Mothers is the result.

Judy Chinitz is a graduate of Columbia University and has an M.S. in special education and an M.S. in holistic nutrition. Currently, she is working as a nutrition consultant to families with children with developmental disabilities in the office of Dr. Giuseppina Feingold, in Mahopac, NY. Along with Dr. Sidney Baker, Judy is the co-founder of Medigenesis, an Internet-based interactive medical database.
